Hiring an interior designer is one of the biggest decisions you'll make for your home. Done right, it transforms your space. Done wrong, it can cost you lakhs in rework, delays, and disputes. Here are the 10 questions every Bangalore homeowner should ask before signing anything.
1. Do You Handle Both Design AND Implementation?
This is the single most important question. Many designers only produce drawings and then leave you to manage contractors, vendors, and installation yourself. This is a recipe for quality problems, delays, and budget overruns.
What to look for: A company that handles design AND build — from concept to installation to handover — under one team. Ask specifically: "Who manages the site once work begins?"
2. Can I See a Written BOQ Before Signing?
A BOQ (Bill of Quantities) is a line-by-line breakdown of every item, material, and cost. Without it, you have no way to compare quotes or track what you're actually paying for.
Red flag: Vague "package" quotes like "Full 2 BHK @ ₹8 lakh" with no itemised breakdown. Always demand room-wise, item-wise BOQ before paying any advance.
3. What Is the Carcass Material for Modular Units?
The carcass is the box structure behind your kitchen and wardrobe shutters. It determines longevity.
- BWR Plywood — best. Water-resistant, borer-resistant, durable.
- MDF — acceptable for dry areas, not ideal near moisture.
- Particle board / HDF — cheapest and weakest. Swells, warps, and fails.
Ask: "What grade of plywood is used for the carcass?" and get it written into the BOQ.
4. Which Hardware Brands Do You Use?
Hardware quality determines daily experience. You open and close a drawer or cabinet 10–20 times a day.
Premium brands: Hettich, Häfele, Blum — imported, long-lasting, soft-close. Unbranded hardware looks similar upfront but fails within 2–3 years.
Ask specifically which brand and model of hinges and drawer runners are being used. Get it in writing.
5. Do You Have a Physical Showroom in Bangalore?
A physical experience centre is a strong trust signal. It means:
- You can see and touch actual finish samples
- The company has an established presence
- You can hold them accountable
If a designer only shows you digital renders or catalogues, you're taking a risk on materials you've never seen in person.
6. What Is Your Warranty Policy?
Any professional interior design company should offer a workmanship warranty on installations. Ask:
- What is covered? (typically: hinges, runners, shutters, structural work)
- How long is the warranty period?
- Who is the point of contact for after-sales issues?
- Is the warranty documented in the handover pack?
If there is no written warranty, that's a red flag.
7. Can I Visit a Completed Project?
Portfolio photos can be staged. Ask to visit an actual completed home — or at minimum, get verified references of past clients who you can call.
An established company with 50+ years of work should have no trouble providing references and site visit opportunities.
8. What Is the Realistic Timeline?
Be wary of designers who promise unusually fast delivery. A realistic timeline for a full 2–3 BHK interior:
- Design phase: 2–3 weeks
- Factory production (modular units): 3–4 weeks
- On-site installation: 2–3 weeks
- Snag closure and handover: 1 week
Total: 8–12 weeks from design approval. Promises of "30 days full home" usually mean shortcuts.
Ask for a milestone schedule in writing — this makes everyone accountable.
9. Is There an EMI Option?
A full home interior can cost ₹8–20 lakh. Ask if the company facilitates no-cost EMI through their financing partners. This spreads out payments without additional interest.
10. Who Is My Single Point of Contact?
Once work starts, you need one dedicated project manager or coordinator — not a rotating cast of executives. Ask: "Who will be my day-to-day contact? How often will I get progress updates?"
